Japan’s Music Market: Connecting YouTube, Social Media and Fan Spending

    Japan Market Insights | Music

Japan’s music market includes physical recordings, streaming and live events. Market statistics show the scale of these businesses, but they do not explain how listeners discover artists or decide to spend money. Consumer research and platform data add another perspective: the connections between discovery, conversation, listening and participation.

    1. The Market Has Several Different Structures

According to RIAJ’s The Recording Industry in Japan 2025, physical music production value reached approximately ¥205.2 billion in 2024, including audio recordings and music videos. Digital music revenue was approximately ¥123.3 billion, with streaming accounting for 91.8% of that digital total.

International repertoire represented approximately 8.7% of CD production value, compared with 34.3% for vinyl. These calculations show how much the repertoire mix can differ by format. They do not measure the share of all listening, and the report’s digital tables do not provide an equivalent domestic/international breakdown.

    2. YouTube Is Both a Listening Platform and a Discovery Point

RIAJ’s 2025 consumer survey found that 60.4% of respondents who had listened to music in the previous six months used YouTube, including Shorts, to enjoy music. This was a multiple-response question, so it measures service use—not market share or revenue contribution.

Discovery also differed by age. Among respondents with a favourite artist, 22.6% of males aged 12–19 named YouTube excluding Shorts as the way they discovered that artist. Among women in their 60s, television accounted for 41.8%. A single platform strategy would overlook this variation.

    3. X Highlights Conversation Around Artists

Hotto Link analysed X posts mentioning 100 artists selected from major music sales rankings, covering January 1 to December 10, 2025. Snow Man, JO1 and SixTONES led total mentions, which included replies and reposts. Male idol groups also occupied leading positions in the company’s separate measure excluding replies and reposts.

This provides evidence of substantial fan conversation around those artists. It does not establish what percentage of all X trends concerns music, or how much spending those conversations generated. Posting activity may reflect existing fandom as well as attract new attention.

    4. Short Videos Make Music Available for Participation

TikTok named Cho Tokimeki Sendenbu’s “Cho Saikyo” its “TOP SONG JAPAN 2025.” Such platform selections offer a starting point for examining how music circulates through user videos, dances and other forms of participation.

A song used in a short video, however, is not automatically a full-length listen, a purchase or a ticket sale. To examine a possible connection, the same song must be followed across platforms and over time, alongside other exposure such as television appearances and film or anime tie-ins.

    5. Live Events Show the Scale of Paid Participation

ACPC’s 2025 survey recorded approximately ¥644.3 billion in sales and 60 million attendances for events covered by its reporting members. Overseas-artist events accounted for 17.6% of sales; K-pop events alone represented 13.7% of the survey total. These categories include multi-artist events, and the survey also covers non-concert live entertainment.

These figures demonstrate the scale of paid participation within the survey’s coverage. They do not identify how attendees discovered an artist or which platform influenced their ticket purchase. Large online audiences and strong ticket demand should therefore be examined as separate measures until evidence connects them.

    6. From Online Attention to Music Consumption

Market statistics show the scale of music consumption, while consumer surveys and platform data reveal different aspects of audience behaviour. Comparing these sources requires distinguishing what each measure actually tells us.

Conclusion: Visibility and Spending Are Different Measures

The evidence reviewed here supports three conclusions. Japan’s music business has different structures across physical formats, streaming and live events. The ways people discover artists vary by age. Online conversation provides another measure of fan activity, but it is not a substitute for listening, sales or attendance data.

For international artists and businesses, a large Japanese market or a high volume of social posts is therefore only part of the picture. The more useful question is whether attention among the intended audience is accompanied by continued listening, purchases or attendance—and what evidence connects those activities.

Japan’s music market should be understood through both its commercial scale and the ways audiences engage. Social visibility matters, but its business significance becomes clearer when examined alongside sustained listening and paid participation.

    Data Notes/データについて
